Chapter 19
The next morning, Susan woke to the sound of her phone vibrating on the coffee table next to the sofa bed. She reached for her glasses and looked at the screen.
âMadison?â
âHey, guess what? I got into Haroldâs phone. He used the same pin for everything. Anyhow, I saw a Chicago number. It looks like this person was rather persistent. Eleven calls. The last call was made the day he left St. Louis to come home.â
âExcellent. Let me get something to write with.â She grabbed her purse and pulled out the notebook she carried around with her. âIâm ready.â She copied down the number.
âDo you think this so called daughter of his killed him?â
âI donât know. If she felt she was entitled to a share of the company and Harold refused to recognize her as his daughter, I can see how sheâd have a motive.â
âBut what about Coach Cullins? Sheâd have to have flown to New York last week. And what was her motive there?â
âI donât know. Maybe she suspected he was the silent partner. She hoped to convince him she had a right to a stake in the company and he refused. Iâm surprised she hasnât approached you.â
âPerhaps she didnât want to come forward as his daughter or she didnât realize Iâd be inheriting part of the company. Did she even know he died?â
âIâll try to get some answers. Iâll talk to you after I talk to Janalyn.â
âGood luck. And thanks for doing this. I have nightmares every night about the murder. I donât think Iâll be able to sleep until someone is behind bars.â
After she put down the phone, Valerie walked in. âWas that Mike?â
âNo. Madison called back with Janalynâs phone number and Iâve got it right here.â She waved her notebook. âLetâs give it a whirl.â
âHang on. What are you going to say? We think you killed Harold Chambers?â
âWe could pretend to be lawyers and say we need to see her about her inheritance. That would get her attention.â
âBoy, you sure can lie like a rug. I think we should think this through. Maybe do a little investigating before we talk to her. Besides, itâs early. She may still be asleep.â
âMadison was up.â
âItâs an hour later in New York. Donât forget weâre on central time.â
âDo you think Jazzy will help us?â
âSheâll say to mind our own business. Butâ¦thereâs someone I think will help us. He was a friend of my husband. He liked my blueberry muffins. Anyway, he worked in Jazzyâs precinct, then retired and started a small bond chaser business. He might help us with a background check.â
âDo you have his number?â
âIâm sure I do.â
âWhat are you waiting for?â
âAgain, itâs early. Iâll make us some breakfast, then weâll call.â
Valerie whipped up a batch of French toast. âI got this recipe from The Lazy Vegetarian. It uses vanilla almond milk in the batter. Gives it some sweetness.â
âItâs delicious. Iâll make this for Mike.â
âI have a feeling heâs going to be suspicious of your cooking since the beet chili.
